Did you use a graduated split density filter to maintain detail and proper exposure between the dark foreground and bright background?

Yes, you have made a correct statement.

I'm going to purchase a new camera one of
these moons, and see if I can maintain the
same effect.

If you go in the evening, the contrast is
much more effective, and the deep reds
stand out more.
