A closer look though It-Tieqa ta' Wied il-Mielaħ
Maltese is a mixture of various languages with a strong Arabic influence. Wied means stream or valley (related to the Arabic wadi), Mielaħ means salt or brine and It-Tieqa means window. Taken together, It-Tieqa ta' Wied il-Mielaħ loosely translates to window of the salty valley.
A little inland there wasn't much water in the bottom of the wied, and it wasn't flowing. It looked dirty and I wasn't inclined to taste it to see if it was salty.
