Thanks Rick - actually I thought of writing a post scriptum but then thought the end is better as it is now.
Basically the next day I planned to spend near Lac d'Aubert and Lac d'Aumar. Judith and I separated, she doing a big loop trail through the Néouvielle lake area and I planned to stay put, reading on my iPad. But then I decided to hike to Hourquette d'Aubert, once there, climbed the neighbouring unnamed Peak 2580. Returned without feeling my knee, I hiked to Hourquette de Madamète, decided I had to lunch on Pic de Madamète and returned again. 980m elevation gain. Only 50m less than the day before.
And yes, I also found time to read for two hours ...
and feeling sorry for your knee... however you told me that you finally managed to make the most of your time there ?
Have you tried to drive the road of Hourquette d'Ancizan ? Much better option and more scenic than Col d'Aspin, and using less gaz (you don't go as low as Arreau).
No I haven't been on Hourquette d'Ancizan. We tooled arouned with the idea of climbing L'Arbizon but didn't as it would have been too long. I guess we would have started from the Hourquette.
I meant just as a way to reach the Campan valley instead of via the Col d'Aspin, on your way to Gavanie and back.
Yes, this is one possible trailhead for l'Arbizon but the route top its top from there isn't very simple. Better for the only "petit Arbizon". Anyway a very nice road which I used to love driving on.

Re: excellent !
I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have used it anyway on that day. I was thinking "fast FAST FAST!" and Col d'Aspin seemed to be the faster route. Also, from Guchen, arreaux didn't seem to be so far lower.
I thought too, that Le Taillon is more difficult than it actually was for me two years ago. This Fausse Brèche - warnings ..... and we had ice and snow there.
Shame that there were clouds around the summit, it is such an excellent lookout!
Hope your knees are doing well - being ! much ! older than you I do know this problem for quite a while :-)

NiceHey Gangolf,
Beautiful photos and great trip report, but what a shame about the ending! How is the knee doing now?
Cheers,
Rick

Re: Funnily enoughOh - I have had knee problems since 2001 - off and on. But as I wrote to the others, luckily it quickly wore off. Thanks!
