South Crestone TH->Willow Lake->Adams  Sucess!

Trippy day: Solo as usual with iffy weather. Slipped off a wet log into a rushing stream, "found" a lost hiker and saw a tornado on the drive out! Did car to car as a trail run. 13 miles RT according to my Garmin.

Willow Lake approach  Sucess!

I had toyed with different ways to get Mt Adams, finally settling on a Willow Lake approach. The plan was for a 2 day jaunt getting as many of the peaks back there as I could get - with Adams, Pt 13580A, and Obstruction Peak topping the list - and the north ridge of KC. The plan was for Adams et al on day 1 and KC North Ridge->Obstruction->Challenger on day 2. Well, I had climbed Twin Peaks A the day before AND had then strapped on a backpack to get to Willow Lake (totaling about 8k feet gained), so I was a bit worn out for day 1. As a result, I decided to forgo running the table to try to conserve energy for day 2. From the NE end of Willow Lake, I went NE up a slabby class 2/3 gully that put me close to the summit of Pt 13580A. I proceeded over that peak and toward Mt Adams, where I think I made it a little harder than it had to be. I thought I saw a worn path that skirted over a few gullies just below the saddle level that would lead to easy grass, but I never really found that worn path once I got up close. So the route was loose scrambling for a while, but I made it without issue. From Adams, I visited Pt 13,546 then descended back to the Adams/546 saddle and then pretty much due south of the saddle - except staying east of the easily-identifiable steep, willowy drainage. After this, I felt unsure of a day 2 that included an out-and-back on Obstruction, and with the very large holiday crowds at the lake, I decided to pack up and leave that day instead. So glad I did, too, since there were TONS more people coming up the trail. I'll be back for KC's north ridge and Obstruction.

Tour de Adams  Sucess!

Climbed with Kevin and Sarah, we went up to Willow Lake then up PT 13580, up Adams' South Ridge, down the NW ridge to PT 13153 and then out South Crestone. Nice loop, 3 peaks and two drainages from one trailhead. Too bad the mosquitos were out in full force all day.

Via Pt. 13,546  Sucess!

Another solo venture. Didn't see a soul all day even though the TH parking lot was full. Went up & over 13,546 first, hit Adams and over to Point 13,153. Great day!!
Ran into the same small herd of bighorn three times!

West Ridge  Sucess!

Cold, wet, and cloudy day. Almost no views. Hanging on the summit in the clouds was beautiful, though, and the route was enjoyable. Would go back in better weather.

First over 10,000 ft peak  Sucess!

My first backpacking trip, first over 10,000 ft peak. Did it with Alex. We camped at Willow Creek Lake for the first night and climbed up the peak the second day and descend all the way down. The camping night was very cold to me, but the peak was unforgettable. A start of real mountain adventure.

East ridge  Sucess!

Climbed Adams, via. horn lakes aproach. From Horn lakes, it was a long steep hike up to the east ridge, and from there we did the ridge proper all the way to the summit. although this is rated class 3, staying on the true ridge makes this a class 4/5 climb on wonderful rock. 10 hours car to car.

Left van in pouring rain and set up tent at tree line. Woke up to good skies and headed up to summit. Long ways and elevation will sock you.

Twice  Sucess!

11/27/07 - Up Northwest RIdge, down West Ridge. Climbed Adams as part of a 3 day, 2 night backpack to Willow Lake to test out our new cold weather gear. Overnight temps were about 0 degrees F... brrr! Summit day was incredibly windy and cold but we managed to get UN 13546 & UN 13153 as well. Adams was a bit spicy with snow and ice.

1/14/18 - Climbed the East Ridge from Horn Creek with Dominic. Very dry conditions, we didn't even carry snowshoes. Some snow to deal with up high though, especially on the interesting finish. Almost no wind in the Sangres in January!! Woohoo!

Tour de Adams  Sucess!

Climbed roughly the NW Ridge from UN 13153. Made a unique detour at the base of summit cap and found some really difficult climbing that made things 1000x more difficult. Descended W Ridge on my way to "Montana Mujeres," UN 13546. A complete tour of the 13ers in the S Crestone Creek drainage.
