Overview

Every mountain group has some views which spread its fame around the globe. There are certain points, where every tourist stops and makes a photo, every hiker sits down, enjoying a famous panorama for some unforgettable minutes. You simply can't go further on.

These views become so famous, that there's a danger for them to become boring. You take in hands a brand new calendar, open it, and here they are again - same mountains, from the same viewpoint and perspective.

And yet I believe that not everyone on SummitPost knows Julian Alps so much. That's why I'm trying to bring you all on the same starting level of knowing the beauties of them. It's my pick and can be subjective. That's why I'm encouraging you to give me suggestions what else to include and what to omit. I'll stick to no more that 15 famous views. The page will evolve, I hope.

The List of Famous Views

Montaz summit from Dogna/Dunja
Montaz summit from Dogna/Dunja

Montaz from the west, from Dogna valley

When we drive by the highway south of Pontebba, suddenly on the east, at the end of Dogna valley a high and sharp horn appears. But just for seconds. To enjoy the view on it, we must take a narrow road into Dogna valley.

Jalovec from Sleme
Jalovec from Sleme

Jalovec from Sleme

You have to hike a bit more than 1 hour from Vrsic pass to reach this famous balcony. But there not only the view on Jalovec makes an impression on you...

Triglav from the south
Triglav from the south

Triglav from across Bohinj valley

You need to ascend on the slopes of South Bohinj Range, the majority does so by using Vogel cable-car. From there Triglav is great in how high it rises above surronding mountains.

Martuljek group from Srednji vrh
Martuljek group from Srednji vrh

Martuljek group from the north

The sharp peaks of Martuljek group seem to be aware of their beauty, so they proudly stepped-out to be seen from the main valley of Sava. And they look even nicer from the sunny terraces on Karavanke slopes.

Soca river - Otona pool

Soca river in Trenta valley

Soca has a unique colour of its waters. Hiking or driving by its river bed through Trenta valley is one of tourist highlights in Julian Alps.

On Velika Ticarica (Trenta)
On Velika Ticarica (Trenta)

Prisojnik and Razor above Trenta valley

When standing on the top of any of lower mountains around Trenta, you have an impression that giants are surrounding you. All of them great mountains, rising more than 2000 meters above the valley. From Velika Tičarica, the most harmonious look Prisojnik and Razor, above the Na Logu village.

Triglav North Face
Triglav North Face

Triglav's north face from Vrata valley

When you drive or walk in Vrata valley from the north, from Mojstrana, suddenly high above, often in clouds a big, 1800m high and 5000m broad monster wall appears...

Mangart from the north
Mangart from the north

Mangart from the north

Usually Mangart takes its place on pictures of tourists, standing by the beautiful Mangart/Fusine lakes. But the magnificient view on it is also from Fusine village or from the field near Ratece.

The valley of Triglav lakes

Dry high karst plateaus above Bohinj lake are beautiful in their seriousness, but when you after a 3h walk reach the valley, hosting a series of mountain lakes, you feel like being in heaven.

Krn from Livek
Krn from Livek

Krn above Soča valley

As you travel by the valley, Krn, rising high, changes its character dramatically. Gentle southern slopes are most beautiful for tour skiing, the steep western face is mostly rocky. And the shape of a nose from wherever you see this mountain.

Rjavina north wall
Rjavina north wall

Rjavina from Kot valley

As Kot is not so broad and popular, only a few visitors come to its end. But the north face of Rjavina, seen from the last meadow, is stunning. Very high, only that difficulties for climbs over it are not the highest from the bottom to top.

Skrlatica from the west
Skrlatica from the west

Skrlatica from the road over Vrsic pass

Over the highest pass in Julian Alps goes a nice panoramic road. But if you find yourself there in a nice evening, the view on Skrlatica walls will certainly make the strongest impact on you.

Mangart and Jalovec from Jerebica / Cima del Lago
Mangart and Jalovec from Jerebica / Cima del Lago

Mangart and Jalovec from Jerebica

Usually these two giants are seen and photographed from below, from Koritnica valley. They are rising more than 2000 meters above the river bed. But even greater is the view on this group from the high balcony of Jerebica / Cima del Lago. It can be ascended in 3-4 hours either from the Italian or Slovenian side.

Razor and Prisojnik
Razor and Prisojnik

Razor and Prisojnik from Kranjska Gora

Due to the architecture of Julian Alps, also these two mountains are standing separated from others, as two rocky giants. From Kranjska Gora we are looking at their north faces, rising steeply above Krnica valley. Between the two is the deep cut and yet hard to pass Mlinarica saddle.

Vis group from NE
Vis group from NE

Vis group from the north-east

Even from Tarvisio the Vis group looks great, but when you approach its NE walls through Zajzera/Valbruna and reach Zabniska krnica, the impression reaches its climax.

Re: excellent gallery

Thanks a lot! Galleries are a kind of advertising. I'd still like some better pictures from these points. And must decide of the rest 5 points.
Cheers!

Re: You...

Yes, Romuald! Find time once and come here. There's also a lot to see in a historical and cultural sense, not only mountaineering :-)

More views

Hi Vid! Those are stunning. I think that the view of Prisojnik, Razor and Skrlatica group from Kranjska Gora deserve a place. Did no see it myself but people say that one face of Rjavina is most beautiful and also (north face) of Site.

Re: Great!

Hi, thank you for your kind words!

Well, I have a few pictures from Pohorje, but there's still no page about it. I'm not an expert about it, but the area is nice for hiking and biking.
