At the summit monument...

A big sign explains the monument itself, it is to 25 atacameños that had their heads cut off!!! Pretty wild stuff.

Re: Why?

Well, at the year 1540 some people came to Atacama on horses, killed 25 of them.
So the fortress was good to defend their people, animals, food, children...
The monument is a reminder of that fact, and it says on the end that the history of atacama people (atacameños) was degreding fast, but not any more. They built this as a symbol of their fight against tyranny.
Tough times for latin american original people, the 16th century sucked big time for every one of them. Inkas, indians, astecas (in Mexico)...

Re: Why?

Thanks for the background info. I used to teach Latin American history and geography and I love to hear about these things.
