Its a big bird. Climbing the rock is illlegal because the rock is due to fall over at any time.
Yes, someone is standing up there. He or she is a Corvus corax.

Scott - where did you get this information from? The only illegal climbing in the park is of the sort that (1) involves arches and (2) one that involves hammering. This one reportedly has a clean aid route on it. I'm curious since it does look like an interesting tower.
I've seen this referred to as (another) Devils Golf Ball.
Great pic by the way.

It is definately illegal to climb Balanced Rock and has been for quite a while. Here are the park regulations directly from the National Park Service (see under closures #2):

Climb The Cobra instead, hee hee.
Scott - a moment of mental retardation on my part :)
You're right - I was confusing this formation with this one (which I THINK is still legal to climb):
My bad :) thanks or clearing this up for me. I'll pass on the Cobra for a while :)
Yes that one is still legal to climb. Have fun!
It reminds our High Tatra - famous Zabia Lalka (Froggy Doll) crag in the border Zabie ridge near Morskie Oko lake ! beatiful!
by the next storminess, he's down.
Was quite impressive when I was underneath it but the tiny bit of rock that it's attatched to worried me. Loved the view.
