Not a geologist, but...

if you imagine the slope of the ground was different and the ground was wet and slippery a few million years ago, I can see this guy coming from pretty far away. As far as why this and not a lot more of'em, my answer is why not? This could have been close to the surface and popped up by geological actions. All that aside, love the composition with all the purple and yellow flowers and the mountains in the background.
