Actually this was an unnamed mountain. I named it Bighorn Peak because I saw more bighorn sheep in one place during my descent than I had seen in any other place. Thanks for your vote.
You are correct, this mountain is not officially named. I made up the name - you can do that here. Did you give my page a vote of 2 stars because you didn't like the page or because you didn't like the name?
Probably mostly because of the name. I don't think unnamed peaks should be named arbitrarily, especially when it gets published somewhere like this. I think Unnamed XX,XXX ft, or Point XX,XXX ft is more appropriate.
However, I do believe you incorrectly labeled the parking spot. Did you park near the Bavarian (Willimas Lake Trailhead), or did you really mean to start people at the Bull of the Woods trailhead??
Sorry if I come across as a ass, no disrespect is meant.
I respect your opinion in this matter. Maybe you're right about this, I'll give it some thought. I don't feel strongly about it one way or another. One of the senior SP members told me that if I do a mountain page for an unnamed mountain I can name it what ever I want to. I thought I had to come up with a name. On the one hand I can see how a person might be upset about someone arbitrarily naming a mountain that they have an attachment to. On the other hand, does it really matter?, it's not an official name...it's only for this web site. Interesting debate.
Let me get this straight...... You're going to assign an unnamed peak a name, and publish it, to make it less confusing????? OK.......... BTW, I know you're well regarded around here attm, but I don't care if vinnypapa consulted you about a name. That's just what we need, Texans naming mountains in New Mexico. Sorry, but that is my opinion.
nmskimountaineer: attm didn't tell me what to name the mountain, he told me TO name it. Read his e-comment a little more carefully and you'll understand why it should be named. If I change the name to what you and your friends call it, would that make everything ok?
No, I'm not asking you to change the name of the peak to what we reference it as. That is not my intent. My only intent is to show that unnamed peaks should not be published with names because it can lead to greater confusion.
attm - no need to get so fired up. It is just easy to push your buttons.....
i'm a few years late to the debate here, but my opinion is that the title of this page "Bighorn Peak" adds to the confusion. At the very least, I think UN 12819 or PT 12819 should be somewhere in the title for this page, and 12819 should be included as a query tag. I was almost about to create a page for the peak until I ran across this one. (I just put up a TR on skiing its NW slope and wanted to find a parent for it.) In my TR, I mentioned that some locals call the peak Sin Nombre. I must have skied with some of the same people referred to by nmskimountaineer.
I asked several people around Taos and everyone calls it no name peak. While literary imagination is usually commendable, in this case your precedent could cause confusion. If every climber gave his or her personal name to every unnamed peak, it would become increasingly difficult for those unfamiliar with an area to know what people are talking about.

Untitled CommentExcellent page! I have a few questions....
Is the name Bighorn Peak official?
Also, is it the eighth highest? The list I've seen ranks Bighorn ninth behind these peaks:
Wheeler Peak
Truchas Peak
North Truchas Peak
Point 12,931
Vintrero Benchmark
Lake Fork Peak
Chimayosos Peak
Jicarita Peak
