Simulclimbed/soloed the majority of epinephrine except the first several pitches. Great day out!
About 8 miles round trip with around 2100 feet cumulative elevation gain. Took about 6 hours including the rests on the way up and back. Lots of class 2, some class 3, and maybe 1 or 2 spots with class 4 maneuvering. There are some spots with exposure, and a summit register is at the north peak that overloooks black velvet canyon.
Great loop with Bob that included Veteran's, Monument, Hidden, Mountain Springs, Black Velvet (high point and top of BV Wall), and Whiskey.
Climbed Epinephrine and Prince of Darkness on this peak.
The easiest route getting there. under 2 hours.
Went up the canyon and down via the eastern side. Tagged Whiskey along the way.
Tried to bag this peak the easy way with my wife via Mountain Springs, but the scrambling shortly after the transition from limestone to sandstone ended up being rowdier than predicted, so we turned back. I would like to get back here one day and knock this one off, I know I could.
4/19/12 Climbed via Epinephrine (5.9) It was a best rock climb (of its kind) I have done to date. It was sooooo good.
An exceptionally windy day made the class 3 scrambling pretty spicey!
Took the easy way there, dropping down from the lime stone ridge.
Yes,it was very windy.
Windy on the ridge, was a good day
The weather is finally starting to cool down enough to get back into Red Rocks. I hiked this one with a group from LVMC.
Been there with 2 other friends. (one turn around on the half way)
Scrambled up the Black Velvet Canyon and took Branch's shortcut descent route.(East face ridge)
We got lost half way down and broke our own way route to get down.
my hiking album
via Mountain Springs this go 'round...the wind may the crossing from Mtn Springs to the backside of Black Velvet more interesting than it should have been :-)
Surprised a few bighorn near the top
Epinephrine. Climbed route with tyler. perfect weather.
VIA BLACK VELVET CANYON SCRAMBLE 4/29/04
Also, 2/17/13 with Peter, Tom, Judy, Barb, Susan and Jacquie; 11-17-13 w/PB,JK,BS&JK, 3-22-15 w/Rick, Barb, Judy & Jacquie
Many times, even though it's none of my favorites in Red Rocks.
A few photos: Black Velvet Peak and Wall
Took the normal way through the canyon up and Branch's alternative down.
First time in 2001. Been up both N and S canyons, descended by east "face" ridge. Also went from Mountain Springs; this is probably the easiest. All scramble routes have a short interesting section with an unusual crux.
Great, great climb. One of my favorites so far.
