Black Velvet Peak Via Mountain Springs
About 8 miles round trip with around 2100 feet cumulative elevation gain. Took about 6 hours including the rests on the way up and back. Lots of class 2, some class 3, and maybe 1 or 2 spots with class 4 maneuvering. There are some spots with exposure, and a summit register is at the north peak that overloooks black velvet canyon.

Close but not quite
Tried to bag this peak the easy way with my wife via Mountain Springs, but the scrambling shortly after the transition from limestone to sandstone ended up being rowdier than predicted, so we turned back. I would like to get back here one day and knock this one off, I know I could.
Been there with 2 other friends. (one turn around on the half way)
Scrambled up the Black Velvet Canyon and took Branch's shortcut descent route.(East face ridge)
We got lost half way down and broke our own way route to get down. my hiking album

three scramble routes
First time in 2001. Been up both N and S canyons, descended by east "face" ridge. Also went from Mountain Springs; this is probably the easiest. All scramble routes have a short interesting section with an unusual crux.
