From Queen Mine Saddle  Sucess!

A very nice hike in the White Mountains. Traversed over to Montgomery as well and made it back to the car well before the thunderstorms started.

Solo  Sucess!

Summited solo. Saw one other person on the peak on this crystal clear day.

Trail Canyon Variant  Sucess!

What holds this mountain up? A tremendous amount of loose scree on the variant. Great views of the Sierra's from the ridge once the scree was below us.

Trail Canyon Variant  Sucess!

Altitude impacted me far more than I was expecting and the slog up the sandy Trail Canyon variant slope took me quite a bit longer than I was planning.

Anyone done both the Trail Canyon and Trail Canyon variation routes and can compare the two? Might try the standard route if I go back to do Montgomery at some point. The variant was a rather steep overly sandy slog.

Pics/commentary are here.

via Queen Mine  Sucess!

Managed to summit despite a very late start. Still a few small patches of snow, but nothing serious.

Windy and all alone  Sucess!

Biggest challenge was the dirt road and locating the Queen Canyon TH. Got nervous the last 20 feet of the 4-wheel drive road so I got out of the Montero and walked up. Very windy that day. Saw only three other people but no fresh tracks to the summit. Getting to 13,140 helped for doing Mt. Whitney on May 28th.

Re: Windy and all alone

Thanks! I love your climber log on this and Kings Peak!

Wild  Sucess!

What a great adventure. A great drive/hunt to find the Mountain, a lonely, quiet camp spot, a faint trail that we lost immediately, a steep face that rolled away as we stair-milled up - redlining our heart rates, a decent descent trail (the right one), amazing views and wild horses on the hike out. This mountain captured the essence of wilderness and solitude for me. I miss it.

Fun failure

We set up camp as snow began falling at the Queen Mine. By morning, snow blanketed the entire area, and progress was slow. We donned snowshoes before long, then removed them as the snow thinned out on the wind blown ridge. By noon, we had only made it to around 12,000 feet, below the false summit, and the weather did not seem to be clearing. We returned to camp, packed up, and headed for burgers, beer, and the bright lights of Vegas.

West ridge  Sucess!

Climbed the west ridge starting from the trail canyon trailhead. Single day, but very long going this way, we saw HUGE quartz boulders along the way. I ran out of water at the summit and was mildly dehydrated (N/V, headache, Dizzyness) by the time we got back to camp.

Very Windy  Sucess!

Hit this one between Shasta and going to AZ for the AZ trail. I started out very late at night and camped on a rock above the bristlecones, going up well after dawn. Didn't feel like doing the adjoining, higher peak (Montgomery) in CA.

Nice hike  Sucess!

Via Queen Canyon with MM on the way back from doing Whitney. This is the only time that I've ever seen wild horses.

from queen mine  Sucess!

Went with a guy from Flagstaff. Didn't sleep at all the night before. I thought there was no way I could do the hike, driving out there from Tonopah. It was divine intervention that gave me the energy to do it! That and the weather was perfect. It took 5 hours to reach the top. Hey I'm quite proud of this one. I liked the hike a lot. Everytime we looked back on the way down, we kept saying, that was sick. I drove back to the sign on the road, and got a picture of me giving a thumbs up. It was a great way to start off a vacation. There was no one else on the mountain at all.

Queen Mine (from saddle)  Sucess!

Started at the high point of the road on the saddle above queen mine. Bagged both Boundary and Montgomery. The traverse to Montgomery is super sketchy!

Beautiful Hike  Sucess!

My son and I camped by Queens mine and drove to the trailhead in the morning. The famous scree wasn't as bad as advertised. Had the mountain to ourselves until we reached the summit where we met a couple from Cali. One of my favorite hikes.

Feeling awful, but made it.  Sucess!

As is often the case when driving from sea-level on Friday and attempting a high peak on Saturday, we felt pretty miserable from the altitude on this moderate hike. Instead of going up to Trail Canyon Saddle, we followed a well-defined path that led southwest from the meadow to the 12,100' saddle below Boundary. We had hoped to do Montgomery Peak as well, but already feeling nauseated and dizzy, elected to save it for another trip. Overall, a nice hike, but the views from the top were 1) quite hazy due to a wildfire in the Sierras and 2) blocked by Montgomery. Nevertheless, a great day to be out.

Perfect day in the mountains  Sucess!

Wonderful hike up the Queen Mine Route with Steve and John. We had the entire mountain to ourselves all day. Perfect weather with summit temps. about 60F and light winds. On the way back down we enjoyed photographing a herd of eight wild horses on the long flat between the two saddles. #18 on the HP list for me!

Queen Mine  Sucess!

Fun and beautiful hike. I traversed over to Montgomery before heading down. If you have the time and the weather is decent I strongly recomend this, its worth it. This was the 2nd to last climb of a 2 week road trip across the country - Magazine Mountain, Black Mesa, Wheeler (NM),Wheeler (NV) Boundary, and Panorama Point last.
