While I didn't get a chance to summit, I was all over this mountain for a couple of weeks during the Grape Creek Fire. Perhaps, I will come back to finish off the summit before fire season is over... or the next time I climb at the city.
There was bad weather for weeks in WA so Heather and I drove through OR, CA, NV, UT, and ID. We climbed 37 peaks in 19 days. We did Black Pine Mountains HP, Black Pine Peak and Cache Peak all in the same day. trip report
Much more accessible than I thought. Did Cache and Independence from the West in under 4 hours. Great view!
Hiked up during a snowstorm. Didn't get to enjoy the views, but still a fun hike. City of Rocks was awesome.
Enjoyable hike, approached via the Southwest Route. Went up Mount Independence first and then on to Cache Peak.
Some very nice views of the City of Rocks and Castle Rock Park. Beautiful fall colors also.
Not a bad day in the hills!
Up through the lakes basin, great weather minimal snow. Did this one after working a full day, then driving all night down from Tri-Cities.
Hiked this summit with Jennifer Knezek, Liz and Tyson Taylor, and Grant Gilbert in a couple of hours also did Independence Peak on the same trip. Fun, fun, fun!
Done as a two-fer with Independance via the southwest route. Beautiful day, but a little windy on top. Dog friendly.
We hiked in from the Independence Lakes trailhead and up to the peak. Loved the lakes and the views of City of rocks was great.
Very fun climb. I was a little timid to go by myself, but everything worked out okay. My best advice is that if you are going to do the Southwest ridge, go in the middle of the summer when the dirt roads are dry. There were several places where I almost got stuck. I decided not to get Independence.......time was a concern, but I will be back.
good way to spend a couple of hours. Climbed it from the west. Good views of City of Rocks
Very nice but mosquito infested walk up. Got up and down just ahead of the thunderclouds. Great views of City of Rocks from the top. Dan's right: you should grab Independence while you're this close. Of course I didn't.
I have proof you did a couple months later with a couple friends...One of the stronger climbers I know. :-)
Another weekend for ID prominence peaks. Also did Independence with this one. City of Rocks area was very cool.
This is another nice hike to an Idaho County Highpoint. A long drive to the TH for the western ridge.
I started from the Independence Lakes trailhead. Nice trail that was also popular with cows. The lakes are in a very scenic canyon. I climbed up to the saddle between Cache and Independence and then followed the ridge to the summit.
Ended up on top during a special earley season deer hunt.
Climbed this on a great Fall day. Drove through the City of Rocks on some road (we didn't know exactly where we were going) and ended up really close to the summit. Just walked up from there.
