Camping in the Lake District

Camping in the Lake District

Generally speaking, camping wild is not allowed in England, but in some parts the authorities don't mind. In the Lake District, you're fine as long as you don't camp on cultivated lands or near homesteads. That leaves plenty of space. On the second night of my trip, I camped just north of Levers Water, a small lake NE of the Old Man of Coniston. The main problem proved to be finding a dry spot; it was a bit boggy around there. Fortunately, in the next week I would find out that that was the exception to the rule and I had no trouble at all finding good camp sites. This is my camp site on the third night, east of Red Tarn. Nice and dry. I took water from a small rivulet coming into the tarn from the east (and filtered it before use). 20 May 2012.
