>> click here for close-up (different angle) : Fitz Roy View of the Fitz Roy seen on the trail leading to Loma del Pliegue Tumbado (1540m). At the bottom, there is the Glaciar Torre falling into the Laguna Torre. From there runs the Rio Fitz Roy that goes down to El Chalten. The green color of the lake is due to minerals. Fitz Roy is also know as "El Chalten", the smoking mountain (name given by the native indians), as clouds often get stuck on the summit. It was first ascended in 1952 by two great French climbers : Guido Magnone and Lionel Terray.
