Great view to conduct fieldwork...
At a conference in Atlanta. Drove over to bag as a state HP. Looks like a neat place to spend a few days backpacking
This is actually the most accessible high point from Atlanta, and is one of the best ones in the region. I've done a lot of trips to the North Georgia Mountains, but was pleasantly suprised by the "Alabama Alps" with the scenic parkway (a diminuitive blue Ridge parkway). Be careful when hiking here in the late spring/summer. Although the terrain feels a lot like North Georgia, the elevations are significantly lower and it can get very hot, especially if you are trying the Lake Trail approach, which I highly recommend.
Highpoint #32. Rented a minivan & took turns driving from MA (home) to MO-AR-LA-MS-AL-FL & back. Unfortunately got here at night; seems like the views in the area would have been nice during the day.
An easy drive up. Buildings were under renovation so not much to do. We took a few pictures and headed on our way.
My 1st highpoint. They were renovating the tower so I could not go up to the top. Chilly and windy.
Spent most of my high school and college years hiking, climbing and rappelling on Cheaha. Spent one of the coldest nights of my life camping there in a storm. War Eagle!
Drove up with the boyscoutts, just after hiking the Odum Scoutt trail
A large party of us hiked this gruelling death march from the base of Mt Cheaha.
The weather was cold and damp/drizzly. The trails for the most part were good but this is an extremely difficult hike. Just because this mountain is at the southern terminous of the Appalachian Mts. in Alabama does not make it easy if you choose this route.
Drove up to the top on a foggy day near the end of winter.
Beautiful day for a summit! TV/radio/cell boadcast antenna tower kind of spoils the vista.
About 1.5 hour drive from Atlanta. Toughest part of the summit was finding a gas station on I-20 as we passed into Alabama. Almost had to start walking!
Not much effort required, but a good time nonetheless. The views are great.
Good views from the Tower at the top of the mountain.
Drove up just to summit, at night. It was cold and clear. Lookout tower was being renovated and was surrounded by scaffolding.
Lots of fun had by all.
A great place to spend the day. I've climbed many of the routes at Rock Garden. Lot's of good hiking trails on the Pinhoti as well.
