Chutla winter scramble  Sucess!

4 of us made a steep ascent via a south gully. See the rough route on the GPS map image, and the photo of our track.

Current condition:
1. the zigzag Eagle Peak trail in the trees are visible. Snow started around 4000'. Even though the next 1000' is buried in snow, you can make out the trail from other's prints. No traction device necessary, but spikes are helpful.
2. we put on snowshoes around 5000' (just out in the open). You get into the woods again a bit, but the slope is not steep, and the snow is rather deep without snowshoes.
3. at the flat bowl in front of Eagle and Chutla, cut the steep slope sideways to get under a gully (see photo). The snow is deep enough that this is safe. However, in the middle of the short climb, we were in the shade (trees). We swapped into crampons on the icy part, and once reached the ridge, put snowshoes back on. The ridge on the top is fluffy snow. It's narrow with rather steep drops on both sides, so walk one at a time.

So, the only tricky part is the short icy section. We down climbed that part. All the rest is rather straightforward.
Right now the snow is deep and not too light. On the way out, I tried to glissade and couldn't get going. So it's rather safe.

Good trip  Sucess!

Summit number two of the day. Up and back down trip along Eagle Peak Trail. Ridgeline from the saddle was a bit difficult to follow at times plus the tree roots and brush didn't make it that easy. Great views from the top though and then descended down into the meadows on the west side. Way easier to go down than the ridgeline. Plus if you slipped you were ok unlike along certain ridgeline portions.

Eagle Peak Trail

Still tons of snow up there which made for some avalanche danger (there was already one recent slide) going up the last part to the saddle. From there, we went along the ridge for a little while, but the huge cornices and fog turned us around probably 100 feet from the summit. No views all day.

Route Climbed: Eagle Peak Trail  Sucess!

Combined this one with a summit of Eagle Peak. Chutla was a far better scramble and the views were superior to Eagle in my opinion. Wahpenayo looked spectacular as did the other Tatoosh peaks. Great day hike.

Spring Ascent  Sucess!

Good day hike up to the summit from Longmire. There's still a huge deal of snow throughout the basin and it feels a bit more like February out there in that regard. Good views of St. Helens and Adams from the top, with awesome glissading on the way down.

OSAT Tatoosh Traverse  Sucess!

Six OSATers did the Traverse in the late spring from The Castle to Eagle, summiting them all. We camped just south of Lane Peak, which is the most enjoyable of the scrambles.
Chutla was the last of our eight summits that weekend, as is a real letdown as the last one - what an anti-climax! Next time I think I'll do the trip west-to-east!

Veggie Belay  Sucess!

Peak number 6 in our traverse from Pinnacle. Some interesting tree root grabbing.

Route Climbed: Eagle Peak Trail Date Climbed: Oct 9, 2005  Sucess!

Wet socked-in day, but made our way carefully along the ridge to the summit. Made extensive use of the "veggie-belay".
