long hike in
Hiked in from the Newfound Gap parking lot. Took about three hours each way, with thunderstorms and driving rain. The police were searching for a Chinese kid who went missing from the summit area.

State HP #11
Would have liked to have done a longer hike, but after getting blistered feet the day before on Mount Mitchell, I decided the 0.5 mile paved path sounded excellent. Clear weather and nice views on top for sure.

High point #3
Hiked to mt. Collins shelter with my pack and stayed overnight. Took the AT to Clingmans up top. Clear day and great view.
This was the second time that my hiking and HP buddy, Mike, and I have visited Clingmans Dome (first time was in 1994?). With the increase of technology (digital cameras, etc.), we basically decided to redo and document the 18 HP's we had already completed along the east coast. The disposable camera/photos just didn't cut it. Views from the atop the observation tower were enshrouded with clouds. Though, the views from the parking lot were outstanding.

Drive Up
Drove up then, then walked up in shorts and sandals. Felt like a cheat driving up rather than hiking but I was rushed for time. Will have to revisit to truly climb this.

Watch for bears
Started from the big parking lot at Newfound Gap and took about two and a half hours to summit. Trail was deserted but peak was crawling with tourists. Making my way back at dusk I was accosted by a dude at the last parking lot before getting back that a bear had just been seen just a few feet from where I had just emerged from the trail. I didn't feel like being an appetizer so my benefactor was good enough to give me a lift back to NFG so I weaseled out of the last 1.8 miles.

HP #1After spending 20 minutes circling the parking lot for a space, we raced up in the rain as a thunderstorm was rolling in. And had fun doing it.
