Spring snowshoe trip  Sucess!

Snowshoed up and across the Crag Crest
Since the actual trail is often a few yards down the slope, I had to follow a different route along the ridge crest itself. Sections where the snowshoes had to come off for spooky class 3 scrambling.

Loop Hike  Sucess!

With Rachael. We had to take her cousin to the airport in Junction and this was a nice loop hike to do afterwards. Lots of construction near the Eggleston trailhead, looks like someone is putting in a logging road, which is unfortunately going to make this hike less scenic on that end.

Crag Crest  Sucess!

Did this as a loop in a counter clockwise direction. It has the best views of all the lakes from top of the ridge and a lot of wildflowers in July.

Awesome hike  Sucess!

Counter clockwise from eastern trailhead. What an epic route. Views and weather were awesome besides some haze in the distance. No bugs but quite some wildlife. Surely a CO highlight.

counterclockwise loop  Sucess!

starting/ending at my campsite at Crag Crest campground. Easily found Finch benchmark in less than 10 minutes of off-trail travel, Also did an "in and out" from campground on 4 July to high part of west end, to get maximum time on the crest, but developing thunderstorms drove me down.

Great Place, Great Sights

This is an immensely worthwhile hike with super views of the Grand Mesa and neighboring ranges, a definite classic! The crest is a fun and easy stroll...but beware, being caught on the crest during a storm could prove unforgettably bad!

Made this trip at least three or four times....high repeat value.

east to west TH  Sucess!

Phenomenal hike. Glad I found this one. Did the loop from east to west after doing nearby Leon and 10855. This is a classic that can be enjoyed by even the casual hiker.

Beautiful morning on the Grand Mesa. Just beat the afternoon thunderboomers. Lots of "skeeters" to keep me company. This hike was all that was advertised. Good alpine hike for a SoCal boy!

Route Climbed: Loop Hike Date Climbed: Many Times  Sucess!

Crag Crest has been a favorite hike of ours each year for about 7 years - when we spend the July 4th holiday with friends on Grand Mesa. We hiked it this year on July 2 (2005) and it certainly was an adventure. The Mesa had a ton of snow over the winter and there was still quite a bit on the summit and down in the Lower Loop - 10 to 15 foot drifts in places on the summit. We got an early start so it wasn't too bad. Always a fun hike - I think we were one of the first groups of the summer to reach the summit this year. I'll post pictures.

Route Climbed: Some from the east, some from west Date Climbed: Several, TNTM  Sucess!

This was a regular hike for us when we lived just down the road in Cedaredge, CO. Sometimes we started from the east, sometimes from the west, but always on the high trail...never did it as a loop hike. Also never did it in winter, mostly in the fall. As already mentioned, there are grand panoramic views from all along the Crag Crest Trail, both to the south and the north.
