Reminds me of buckwheatThe flowers were on tall stalks growing out of a low-lying mat of green? Looks like a type of buckwheat to me... Anyway, nice pic :)

BuckwheatTarol is right its definitely a buckwheat. Hard to tell from a photo which one (there are well over 100 species), but it looks like it may be cusion buckwheat (Eriogonum ovalifolium). Throughout much of the west, there are many varieties of that species.
