My 4th Utah county high point. Deseret Peak via the South Willow Creek route. Would love to go back and do the loop!
It was real hot, kinda like we're in some kind of desert or something
Took the dog we just adopted for her first hike and took the loop up Willow Fork and down Pockett's Fork. Very windy at the south saddle and stayed windy most of the ridge until we dropped down into Pockett's Fork but it's a beautiful hike! If you're just doing a Willow Fork out-and-back, you're missing out--Pockett's Fork has some incredible views, especially as you drop down into the basin of Dry Lake Fork, the view of the peak is awesome! Plus, that side is less-traveled too (we only ran into two others on that side vs. the 4-5 groups on the Willow Fork side).
A leisurely outing with my bud from Med-school. Blisters on the way up and a weird tendinitis of the right knee on the way down. Still worth it!
This was a nice hike, with outstanding views. I'm a little out of shape, so it took almost eight hours to complete the loop up Mill Fork and down Pocket's Fork. There was very little snow, and none that I had to actually cross.
There was bad weather for weeks in WA so Heather and I drove through OR, CA, NV, UT, and ID. We climbed 37 peaks in 19 days and on the 13th day of the trip we did Deseret Peak and Flat Top Mountain. Deseret was a lovely hike similar to Timpanogos but Flat Top was a horrible hike through cattle grazing land with numerous biting flies. trip report
On the trail at the hottest part of the day. Would not recommend doing this in the middle of the day, definitely get an early start on this one. Don't forget to sign the register just below the summit! Fantastic 360-degree views, scenic trail, overall a great mountain. A lot of firsts for me here: my first Ultra-prominent, my first CoHP, and my first range HP. Wonderful peak, highly recommended!
Beautiful area; nice place to beat the crowds. :)
Climbed this peak twice as a kid. Last time I climbed it was September 2005. Need to climb again. Tooele County 4 life!
Really great peak. Highly recommend it to anyone wondering if they should do it.
6/18/2016 After work hike. Started just after 7 pm. 1:21 up and :47 down. Love that this trailhead is less than an hour from my work.
10/15/2105 Nice loop hike along with South and North Willow Peak. I hit Deseret first hiking up the Mill Fork trail and then continued on to South Willow and North Willow before retracing my steps a bit and descending the Pockets Fork trail.
9/10/2011 As part of a backpack with my dad. Second county Highpoint and second ultra behind Kings Peak.
We climbed Deseret just after I moved to Utah from Texas. It was still half covered in snow and we had to hoof it for over a mile, we lost the trail for a little while, but still trekked on and found the top. It was great, just a little early in the season for it.
Hiked up the Mill Fork route and down the Pockets Fork route. The Mill Fork route was very busy with many groups hike this Labor Day. The weather was ideal.
Did this hike with my mom (age 63) and my two oldest kids (11 and 9). It took us all day, and we were all pretty worn out afterwards, but it's still a great hike. This was my second time up the mountain, and it was much later in the year. I'd say a little earlier in the year, when there's snow in the couloirs and the streams are running would be a bit nicer, but it's still gorgeous up there.
We had beautiful weather without too much haze, so we were able to make out Timp, Nebo, Olympus, and Antelope Island. The views from the top are really unique; a great example of basin and range topography. It was a bit hot, but that's just late summer in Utah.
We skipped the loop route; I did it a few years ago, and the views were great, but I remember it being longer (of course, last time I hiked the road was washed out, so the whole hike was longer. I might be misremembering.)
There weren't a lot of people on the trail; we bumped into fewer than 20. I deliberately waited until the week after Labor Day, since I'm not fond of crowds. But I don't think you'll often get a crowd up there anyway. We did meet a really nice couple (with an awesome Australian shepherd buddy) at the summit to take our picture.
I'm awfully proud of my mom and kids toughing it out with me, too. Great day on the mountain together.
Volunteered in the morning at mile 5 aid station of the big cottonwood marathon, then headed out to hit this beauty. The views on top are incredible. 8.4 miles roundtrip with 3,500' elevation gain from loop campground.
Climbed with my 10 year old son (who is now 17). Awesome hike, and not nearly as busy as the Wasatch trails.
Got snowed off this mountain my first time, so I made another attempt about a week later. I have to say out of all the places I've hiked in Utah this is one of the best. The views of the salt flats are amazing. Deseret is a hidden gem.
Climbed up South Willow to the top of Deseret Peak with a couple of my friends. Lots of thunderclouds in the sky but luckily none really got us, just a little hail in sections. The big highlight of the hike was seeing a massive explosion and the subsequent mushroom cloud in Dugway from the summit. After that we went down Pockets Fork. A really fun day!
With Francis Peak
Great hike! Took the loop route. There was great variety there. Trip Report at http://downthetrailblog.com/2014/06/deseret-peak/
