Desert Four O'Clocks

Blooming Desert Four O'Clocks (Mirabilis froebelii) photographed in First Creek area of Red Rocks, Nevada. April 2008. These are perennials that die back to their roots each year. Their magenta flowers open for the night in order to attract hawkmoths which pollinate them. They do not always open precisely at four o-clock and can open in the morning on cooler days.
