Eagle Lake Trail

Eagle Lake Trail

View from the Eagle Lake Trail, just inside the Desolation Wilderness on the west side of Lake Tahoe's Emerald Bay in the Sierra Nevada. - photo taken May 8, 2004, in the middle of a drought period in central California. I'm having trouble identifying the prominant tree in the foreground (to the left). What type of pine is it??? The elevation is approximately 7,000 feet, and this is a south-facing slope.

Hmmm..

It's bark looks very much like that of a ponderosa pine.

Looks more like pine to me

The needles and bark both look like pine.

Re: Looks more like pine to me

What species (at 7,000 feet)? Stunted Ponderosa ???

Re: Looks more like pine to me

No, not ponderosa... in the eastern Sierra, particularly the Lake Tahoe and Mammoth areas, Jeffrey pines are all over the place. So it may be Jeffrey Pine or it may be western white pine. Can't tell for sure unless I can count the needles per bundle. Any chance you did that? Or knowing what the cone looked like would help. Bark and a far off shot can only produce guesses where # of needles and cone shape/size can give you a definitive answer.

Re: Looks more like pine to me

It's not an ordinary tree, it survived a
drought. I'm thinking 5 needles per bundle.

Re: Looks more like pine to me

If it was 5 then it's probably a western white pine.
