Hmmm..It's bark looks very much like that of a ponderosa pine.

Re: Looks more like pine to meNo, not ponderosa... in the eastern Sierra, particularly the Lake Tahoe and Mammoth areas, Jeffrey pines are all over the place. So it may be Jeffrey Pine or it may be western white pine. Can't tell for sure unless I can count the needles per bundle. Any chance you did that? Or knowing what the cone looked like would help. Bark and a far off shot can only produce guesses where # of needles and cone shape/size can give you a definitive answer.

drought. I'm thinking 5 needles per bundle.
