HP #38!  Sucess!

Long trek through the snow, minimal elevation gain... climbed this in the winter to avoid all the bugs.

Highly recommended for anyone looking for an easier winter hike... very very scenic!

State Highpoint #38  Sucess!

Gorgeous little hike into some pretty rugged and swampy country. So grateful for the people that built the bridges to walk across. Whale Lake was amazing! The summit is pretty nondescriptive though. By far, one of my least favorite state highpoints visited.

Very Rainy Day!  Sucess!

Drove up from Duluth after attaining HPs in IL, WI, & MI. It was a very rainy & wet day all the way to the trailhead and began to rain again during the hike in. The trail is very rugged due to the rocks and roots....not my kind of hike but it was a necessary highpoint. I wouldn't recommend it for anyone who isn't bagging it in a highpoint quest. It just wasn't very fun due to those trail conditions. The rain did keep the mosquitoes away so being soaking wet was a good tradeoff for me. This was HP #21.

Bugs, Trees!  Sucess!

The board walks are much appreciated. The trees and bugs are thick. There are a few places with a nice view. Watch for where the trail turns uphill to the right over rock at the second overlook getting near the summit. The bugs wouldn't let us hang for long at the summit.

HP # 27  Sucess!

Climbed it with my wife while on a vacation to Minnesota. Encountered lots of mosquito's and forgot to bring bug spray, so we got bit a lot. But it was a pleasant hike and not too difficult. This was highpoint # 27 for me.

Larvitour Stop #30  Sucess!

Climbed up on an overcast afternoon. Saw lots of fellow climbers (and the most ferocious mosquitoes I'd ever seen). Thankfully, the evening's thunderstorm held off until I was off the mountain, though it made the drive back to Duluth along the lakeshore rather interesting... Remember, fellow hikers, that there's only one road to and from this high point.

5000 Mile Roadtrip

STHP # 16 for me. Part of a 5k mile road trip through much of the Northern States. Did 4 total state high points and visited a ton of National Parks and other scenic stops.

Trail is very straight forward. Very wet. Very Beautiful. Loved this area. Would be fun to spend a month up there.

Highpoint #38  Sucess!

Up and down pretty quickly to avoid the bugs! Cloudy when we got to the top so didn't get much of a chance to "sightsee." Lots of moose droppings on the trail after the bridge over one of the swampy areas. On the way back saw the "generator" of the poop about 10 yards off the trail - made a hasty retreat as it looked like a cow and didn't know if she had a calf somewhere. Saw a ranger on the trail soon thereafter and he indicated that there are very few moose left in the area so we were fortunate to see her.

HP #2  Sucess!

Very remote, don't forget bug spray and good shoes! The trail is quite uneven. Great views, totally worth it. I've never been to the Boundary Waters and I fell in love. Whale Lake is a gem. Took us about four hours roundtrip.

Lake Superior is Superior  Sucess!

Gravel road driving in is in great condition for any car. Signage to trailhead made it easy to find. Cool morning with no mosquitoes. Heard a bear from the distance but never saw one. Remarkeable scenery, relatively easy hike. Really loved the towns and road the hugged against lake superior on the drive up there. Had the best fish and chips I ever had in Grand Mais.

Highpoint #45  Sucess!

Rained 6"-8" prior to my arrival. Since I drove from southern Illinois, I wasn't going home just because the trail and board walks were submerged. Hiked through water knee deep numerous times. A kayak or canoe would have been nice. Eagle Mountain is located in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness.

Mosquitos on MN's high point!  Sucess!

State HP #39........We had cold and rainy weather, even for mid-June. If we weren't pressed for time, then maybe we would've waited until the next day, but the trail isn't too steep or dangerous. Forest roads were well maintained and the trail head directions were well marked. The hike goes several miles over tree roots, and stumps. The mosquitos were awful however, even in cool and rainy weather. After you hit the scenic viewpoint, hike further to hit the summit monument and take pics there too!

Standard route via Whale Lake  Sucess!

Woo-hoo! "Mountaineering" in Minnesota! Might as well, since I'm back here in the North Country visiting my parents. Growing up in Minnesota, we came up to the Boundary Waters all the time, but then I moved out west and got the summit fever in the Rocky Mountains. My Mom said that we went up Eagle Mountain when I was very little, but I couldn't remember so I decided to come back. It was a much shorter hike than I was expecting and I saw 27 other hikers on the trail on a Tuesday. The views are fine at the top, and there sure is a lot of wild country around here! But really, it is not my favorite thing to hike through tree tunnels and bug infested swamps, so obviously the best way to travel around here and get a great wilderness experience is to get yourself a canoe and head off on a long trip into the BWCA!

Evening Hike  Sucess!

Early evening hike with the mosquitoes. It was very satisfying to see so much forest wildlife habitat in the north woods.

Eagle Mountain  Sucess!

Nice hike. Trailhead is easy to get to and well-marked. The forest roads are well groomed. Trail had a bit of standing water. Many tree roots and rocks. After the "scenic view", make sure you keep hiking at the top of the area to find the plaque. Enjoy the Mosquitos!
