Cotton Creek
Climbed via Horse Thief Basin while on a backpacking trip into Cotton Creek. Traversed over to De Anza and Gibbs, then descended Middle Fork back to Camp.
An amazing area with tons of wildlife. On this day I saw a bear in Horsethief Basin and about 200 elk above treeline along with tons of deer. Great trail through Horse Thief even if it is a bit grown up.
Started at the North Brush Creek t/h out of Hillside. After about 4 miles, we took the unmaintained trail up to South Branch Lake (avoiding Brush Lakes). Camped out. Proceeded up the Crossover Trail to the western ridge. Dropped packs. Climbed the peak and raced down ahead of an incoming storm. Unfortunately, no register to be found. Downclimbed to Banjo Lake (still frozen) and bushwhacked out the non-existang Middle Brush Creek drainage trail. Topped it off with a dead battery miles out on a 4x4 road... Could have used a little of the electricity of (Electric Peak).

A heck of a winter backpack
Snow levels in the Sangre de Cristos were much higher than normal this year. We used the Cotton Creek approach to access Horsethief Basin and then had a nightmare of a time climbing the steep treed slopes above to access Electric Peak while avoiding avalanche terrain. It was a 3 day trip. Went back the following week to make use of our nice trench to climb De Anza and Gibbs and saw that the slopes below the Electric Peak - Pt. 13060 saddle (which we had avoided previously) had slid.

Route Climbed: North Ridge via Major Creek Date Climbed: June 1, 2003It wasn't the nicest day weather-wise, but Erin and I had complete solitude on the Major Creek Trail and Electric. A TR is available here.
