success on 2nd attempt...  Sucess!

Clockwise loop: up Kents Canyon (south ridge), down Indian Mill Canyon. Ascent was fairly straightforward; descent (ridge down to trail) involved bush-whacking. With Dennis and Greg. I had attempted this some years ago...

North Ridge Route  Sucess!

Smooth sailing on the jeep trail to get to the North Ridge saddle. A little rough going with downed timbers and bushwacking up and down that ridge. Beautiful views all along the way. Hiked it with Greta Sallings and the two retrievers, Kyra and Koufax. We were the only ones on the mountain that day. Didn't see another single soul. Well worth the time.

We made it  Sucess!

We went up the SE ridge route and came down the N ridge route as a loop. I clocked it at about 7 hours to do 7.5 miles.

The SE ridge route started steep on the off-trail portion and got steeper. But other than the grade, it was relatively easy walking with little of the brush and downed timber that plagued the N ridge route. Navigation was easy as we followed the ridges up to the summit.

The N ridge route was a hard slog. It had about 1.5 miles of almost continual thorn bushes, stinging nettles, and downed timber to push through. Navigation was difficult because trees obscured the view and it was difficult with the downed timber to maintain a consistent course.

While it was harder than I expected, I had fun because I knew what off trail hiking was as opposed to on trail. This was my 16 and 14 year old's first time doing anything significant off trail and they struggled.

Day hike with old friend.   Sucess!

Nice day hike with old friend Jeremy. Hiked up Kents Canyon, then choose a ridge line to walk up to the main South Ridge then onto the summit. Took some rope and rock gear to potentially climb on the cliff bands. Rock was completely loose and no safe to be on. Beautiful views in secluded area. No others were seen on the peak. Found wreckage of old aircraft on the way down in a side ravine. Was informed it was from an old crash that occurred in the 1970's or 80's.

Amazing Hike  Sucess!

My dog and I hiked this one today from the north. There was tons of snow on the way up there and a beautiful cornice along the rock cliffs. We were lost most of the time but finally made the summit after 4 hours of climbing. Then it was 3 hours back down. We parked in the large lot below the forest service cabin so that added 5 miles roundtrip. We loved this hike !

We did it!  Sucess!

Summited via North ridge, descended via south...went up Kent's peak and eventually found Kent's Canyon Trail to make a loop. Lovely area to explore.

Off trail  Sucess!

There were trails, then there weren't. The summit cairn is worth seeing on its own

elkhorn  Sucess!

Great day, we followed the 4 wheeler trail up the Kents canyon path then veered off to the SE ridgeline, hiked north along the ridge from there, summited, then continued north along ridge and descended to trailhead. Fun Day.

North ridge  Sucess!

After doing the Samaria Mountains HP (Wood BM), my wife and I stopped at the Summit campground to spend the rest of the day and night while I hiked to the top of Elkhorn Peak. I hiked it from the campground which made it about 11 miles roundtrip and 3000 feet of elevation. I used up almost all my water as it was a hot day but the off trail portion from the Indian Mill Canyon crest went fine. Just stay to the ridge crest as much as you can and aim for Pk 8577 along the way. Often a use trail can be found which helps make the almost two miles of off trail OK.

Southeast Ridge  Sucess!

I became interested in climbing Elkhorn Peak after reading about its history. It is one of the most prominent peaks in the area. I climbed up the Southeast Ridge which wasn’t planned but turned out to be a great route. There was still a lot of snow in Kents Canyon. Good view from the summit.
