Thanks for reading it. As usual I didn't do a good job of taking pictures along the way, but luckily my climbing partner and other friends had taken enough to fill in the gaps.
I agree that it's the second largest city and is a large city by New Mexican standards, but it still has less than 80,000 people. Given the population and the cityscape my personal opinion is that it qualifies as a small city. As a point of reference Tracy, CA is the 95th largest California city (population wise) and has a larger population than Las Cruces, NM.
Sergio! It's hard work just setting aside a full day for climbing, but hopefully within the next year or so I'll make it that way. When I do I'll send you a line. BTW, I just saw an ongoing discussion about roping up on Orizaba and it brought back some fond memories.
...does it end up being a pretty technical climb? Your route was class 4 but you guys roped up and had some pretty sketchy situations on there. Well written TR. Thanks for sharing.
IMHO the "Normal Route" should probably be rated ~5.4 according to today's standards. Given other activities I haven't spent a lot of time on rock recently so my judgement might be a little bit off. However, I can unequivicably say that the route is substantially harder than the six or seven fourth class routes that I've done in CO and I personally would not want to do it without a rope and gear. Thanks for the kind words.
This one certainly qualifies as one of my most interesting days in the mountains. Generally I prefer my rope to reach all the way to the next belay :). Yeah, next time you're down this way feel free to drop me a line.

thanks for the read!looks like a fun climb... I don't have rock like that here in the cascades so it's fun to read about other peoples adventures elsewhere!
