Four Gables via South Slopes  Sucess!

Part of a Humphreys Basin trip. Note that as of July 2017 the summit register for Four Gables is located on (and bolted to) the summit of Peak 12,801 - this is not the summit of Four Gables as shown on the USGS maps, but is the highpoint of this section of ridge. Getting to the summit of 12,801 is class 2 from Desolation Lake. On this visit we tagged all the high points of the area in search of the correct summit. All these have outstanding views, all different, so a traverse of the whole area is worthwhile, and very straightforward.

Traverse from Basin  Sucess!

Fun traverse from Basin via South Basin. Saw some fellow Sierra Challengers on the higher bump. Chute to Horton Lakes was horribly loose and no fun. Pictures

Ecellent hike  Sucess!

Climbed this with Ambret and two others. Very decent ascent up a peak that looks completely different from the other side, plus a really nice sandy beach that awaits to refresh you after the descent.

Summited from Desolation Lake  Sucess!

After hiking to and camping at Desolation Lake, summited Four Gables Peak via the south face, a relatively easy ascent up sand and some boulder-scrambling. Great views of Mt Tom, Horton Lake, Basin Mountain, Desolation Lake and the Sierra backcountry from the top.

From N. Lake W/Four Gables South & Gable Lakes Peak  Sucess!

Sierra Challenge Day 6: https://goo.gl/photos/mykueKNm5qWDnCpw6

The register is on Four Gables South, reachable via a fun class 3 scramble from Four Gables, or class 2 scree & boulders if you prefer more loss & gain.

From Pilot Knob  Sucess!

The actual summit when approached from the south is a joke with hardly any prominence. The final climb is a tortuous sandy slog too. But, hiking across the awesome Humphreys Basin made it all worthwhile. Second peak of the day after Pilot Knob in the morning.

East Ridge  Sucess!

Nice stroll along a well ducked trail to upper Horton lake. Delicate class 3 descent at southern end of the lake. Tedious moraine followed by loose serpentine chutes with redeeming class 3 and 4 moves along the way.

From Desolation  Sucess!

An easy walk from the lower lakes to the summit. There is a fine boulder for napping on at the summit, along with fine views.

dayhike with unamed peak  Sucess!

From upper horton lakes....tedious climb and some rather challenging 4th class to summit but the peaks granite faces were spectacular. Great views and the upper Horton lakes were beautiful!

East Ridge (Chute)  Sucess!

Well it isn't the East Ridge at all really, rather a chute on the south side of the East Ridge. Still a great outing... perhaps my favorite valley in the Sierra! Easy route up to Upper Horton Lakes with more of a use trail than I expected. Fun climbing up to the ridge and then over to the highpoint to the south. Seems like a lot of people don't bother to visit the actual summit. Hmmmmmmmmm......

Still had time to swing by Point 12808, my favorite unnamed peak in the Sierra, before heading out. Love the view of it from down the valley. Took the NE Chute down and then back to the trailhead.

Made up a route from Steelhead Lake  Sucess!

Camped at Steelhead and started up towards Steelhead Pass in the morning. Decided once we got closer instead to take a steep talusy chute straight up to the plateau. This chute ended up being really loose and steep, so on the way down we took Steelhead Pass. Supposed to be class 2 but I think we chose the wrong line and ended up in some low class 3. Last summit of a week of peak bagging - I'm just about done with talus for a while. Oh who am I kidding, I'm going back tomorrow.

I lead a Sierra Club trip over Piute Pass to climb the peak from Humphreys Basin. A very enjoyable outing.

From Desolation lake  Sucess!

Took the easy way up from Desolation Lake. The only hard part was a little bushwacking a little ways above the lake. High winds on the top forced us down early, but the views were amazing.

South slope starting L Lake  Sucess!

From a high camp at L Lake, crossed Steelhead Pass to access the south slope. Very windy up high. Found the correct summit on only my second attempt of several high spots. Nice view over to Mt. Tom.
