Garden Wall, Dawn

Garden Wall, Dawn

From Point 8479, this is part of Glacier National Park's Garden Wall, a knife-edge ridge on the Continental Divide and which leads to Mount Gould. From this vantage point, as you can see, there are excellent views of Upper Grinnell Lake, Grinnell Glacier, Salamander Glacier, and Gem Glacier. And what looks like fog below and right of the ridge is actually a smoke inversion caused by the 2003 fires. From the porch at Granite Park Chalet at night, we could see the flames in the valleys below. This was both spectacular and ominous. Glacier National Park, Montana--August 2003 "Sea of clouds trapped naturally by a mountain dam" by SP member eric b. I like that. Very much. Thanks, Eric.

Nice shot!

I was just up at Many Glaciers and spent a lot of time looking at Gem, Salamander and this very wall from much lower. So amazing to see what it looks like from this vantage point.

Re: Nice shot!

Thank you! You just can't go wrong in Glacier, it seems. Truly my favorite national park and maybe my favorite spot in the whole country.

Thank you for the kind words. This was one of the most inspiring scenes I've ever beheld, and I'm glad my attempted capture of it has generated so much positive feedback.

Re: Thin Boundary

You could close your eyes and step out and find out really fast!

Actually, heaven begins when the peaks of Glacier come into sight from U.S. 89. Well, it's my heaven, anyway.

Belongs in a book

Honestly, this photo is by far the best I've seen of Montana. I just showed it to my coworker and he immediately, without saying a word, saved it as his desktop background. HAHA

Re: Belongs in a book

Thanks a lot for the compliment! Spend some more time here, though, and you'll find lots more great Montana photos by a lot of different people. And there are some great pages on Montana ranges here (hope to get back to you with some of that WY/MT info tomorrow).
