If you're looking for +18" Sierra trout, try Snow Lake in the Emigrant Wilderness Area. We've caught several Rainbows in the 18-22" range without hardly trying.
As someone who knows absolutely nothing about fly fishing, other than it looks really cool, this album was really informative. (Plus the photos are great) Thanks for putting it up.
Really appreciate your effort here. Looks like your response to my earlier question was the seed of this album. Just need to get my butt back to the mtns with my flyrod! Thanks again...
My best was a 14" Brook Trout (Char). I have also caught some Salmon up to 20" on a fly rod. Good fun. The largest I have seen was a 16" brook trout on a spinner with worms that was caught and a much larger one that threw the hook with a high jump. Best visual watching a doctor catch several large trout with a light rod from a canoe on Katahdin Lake. Worst Visual: A large Atlantic Salmon swimming past a submerged shopping cart in Kenduskeag Stream in Bangor Maine.
Nice summary of your Sierra trout fishing peninsula. When I began backpacking in the Sierra over 3 decades ago, trout fishing was my primary interest. Although my consuming passion became landscape photography, I still enjoy occasional fishing especially when on trips with others that do. On my recent trip into Kings Canyon to a remote high elevation lake with one of my bros, we did well catching sizeable goldens and hybrids with one going about 17. All with the reddest tastiest flesh one will find among salmonids including fresh run steelhead or king salmon. David
Thanks singstream. These wild trout do put up a spectacular fight, the bigger the better. And catching them in the sierra nevada at 10,500 to 11,000 feet is simply as good as it gets.
