Backpack  Sucess!

Backpacked from Lake Mary the day before, came over Anderson and Tinker Knob. Did not go for Needle and Lyon as the smoke was getting to us, I guess I'll have to come back here someday.

From Squaw   Sucess!

Hiked up to Granite Chief several times during backpacks to Five Lakes and Whiskey Creek as a teen. Beginning of a lifelong love affair with mountains.

From Squaw Valley  Sucess!

First of 5 peaks - Granite Chief, Needle, Lyon, Tinker Knob & Anderson. Pretty grandiose name for such a nondescript peak.

quick afternoon via tram  Sucess!

After hiking Mt. Davidson and Ophir Hill in Nevada in the morning I stopped at Squaw on the way home for a quick run un Granite Chief. Took the tram and followed ski run roads to col beneath Emigrant to the PCT then across and on up to the summit of Granite Chief. Around 3 hours car to car.

Tuesdays in summer (2015) is discount day for tickets.

East Ridge  Sucess!

A former skier, I enjoyed wandering under and around the lifts. Part of my route was on the trail, part on the straightest line. Loved the view from this highpoint. Then on to Needle Peak and back.

From Tinker Knob  Sucess!

Followed the PCT part-way, then wandered up the ridge. Kind of disappointing being so close to the ski lifts. Trip report.

loop hike  Sucess!

With Silver Peak and Squaw peak for a loop hike. Saw the first ever porcupine I've ever seen in the wilds on this hike!

From Squaw Valley  Sucess!

Hiked up the mountain at least twice, not quite sure of the dates other than the it was early summer and still a bit snowy the second time, and I remember practicing self arrest on a steep snowy patch.

Great Loop  Sucess!

Took the Shirley Canyon Trail to Shirley Lake and then bushwacked to the summit. Descended via the Granite Chief Trail.

Unbeatable!  Sucess!

Took the tram up with Cedar to save wear and tear on my injured knee. A perfect day! Warm temps., clear views, hardly any wind, snowy Desolation peaks to the south and wild flowers.
Tagged a fun class 3 crag at the pass on the way back then killer smoked pizza at Fireside in the village after the hike.

Where's the snow?!  Sucess!

Not enough snow at squaw to make skiing worthwhile, so hiked up Granite Chief instead. Some snow cover along the PCT but trail was easy to follow. Great weather and views at the top.

x-country from west  Sucess!

we didn't take the easy way. parking at talbot campground on the west side, we hiked several miles into granite chief wilderness. after which we went x-country following the middle fork drainage to the back of squaw valley. the pacific crest trail took us to base of peak, we continued to summit setting up a bivy there. we spent a good night watching fireworks from the summit. nice...

Granite Chief to Squaw Valley Resort  Sucess!

Full trial without snowshoes or crampons. Ice axe was used on last 100 feet. After summit, we hiked to Squaw valley ski resort and followed one of the ski lift down hill. About 1/2 miles to the village, Bo magically survived from a big drop off. It was very cool to ride on a patrol's snowmobile for the last 1/2 mile.
