Awesome climb! In the snow-reduced visibilty-great route-the classic Colorado Climb. It was my Dad's 73rd birthday-the climb was dedicated to him, Michelle & I called him from the top. We arrived at the trailhead around 8am to light snow, cold and foggy. Visibility was at the best times no more than a 1/8 mile but the pic's and maps we had showed us the way. The climb was very straight forward to about 13,500 when we came up to the south-ridge. Got progessively steeper and rockier and with the light snow made it a bit tricky in places. It certainly wasn't the Hillary Step but a challenge to say the least. Once over that obstacle it was just a matter of following the ridge to the top, nothing of consequence as far as difficulty. It took us 4+ hours for the climb to the top and 3+ down, every inch very worth while. The views coming down were fantastic as the clouds parted and opened up the valley below and ridges above. Michelle is a great climbing partner and soon to be my wife, nothing better in the world! I would recommend this route to anyone that likes to stay away from the crowds, we were the only ones climbing from the south side.

Our First 14er. Beautiful hike. We started out pretty early, so we didn't see to many people when we started, but as we began to go down the mountain, the swarms of people looked like ants invading the mountain.

Route Climbed: South Slopes Ridge Traverse (via Kelso Ridge) Date Climbed: August 28, 2003  Sucess!

A nice hike after climbing Torrey's. Because we started our hike at around noon on a Thursday, the mountain was not crowded, and we were the only people on the summit. The weather was nice and there were only a few patches of snow remaining on the ridge.

Came back to climb after summiting Torreys via Dead Dog Couloir in the spring without enough time to traverse to Grays. 3rd 14'er for Spencer the Mountain Dog, who couldn't figure out what to make of the mountain goats- he stopped, stared, and just wagged his tail enthusiastically- not even a bark!

What a perfect day for a hike/climb. I met dempseyj and his son why I was putting on sun block around 12,300'. We continued the hike together for most of the day. I told him about SP and I am glad to see that he found it. Anyway, after about 700' we ran into a family of mountain goats. I got within 10' of one of them and got some great photos. We continued up the switchbacks all the way to the top. Everybody talks about Grays and Torreys being just a bump in the 14er bagging process. However, I have to say that this was one of my favorite mountains so far. It was a beautiful, pleasant hike, with lots of wildlife and perfect weather. We spent about 40 minutes on top and then headed over to Torreys. Check that one out for more details.

Climbed in combination with Torreys and had the pleasure of doing so with Alan. There was lots of fresh snow from the night before and brutal winds, by my Maryland standards, going up Grays. There were lots of skiers going down the Grays-Torreys saddle, tons of dogs, but no mountain goats.

Cold and fun, just me and the mountain goats, man can they climb.

A long slog in with the access road closed at the main highway, but creates the solitude. Now if we could just ban the noisemakers, I mean snowmobiles, can't see them, but can sure hear them.

The temperatures were increasing so I decided to start another season of climbing fourteeners. I picked Grays and Torres as my first of the season. I was already feeling in pretty good shape after doing Humphreys Peak (12,600’) in Arizona that had 3,200 feet of elevation gain.

I reached the trailhead at 7:30 and off I went. There was no wind and the temperatures must have been in the low forties. In other words it was perfect hiking weather. Looking up at the two peaks they were still covered in snow and where the climb really begins it was nothing but snow all the way to the top. I chose to do Grays first then Torres. The trail to the top was a straight shot and wasn’t too bad. The snow at this time was in great condition and after 2 ½ hours from the trailhead I was at the top of Grays.

Route Climbed: traverse from Torreys Date Climbed: summer '96  Sucess!

Did this with Z and Mark Timmerman. Traversed over from Torreys. Having goten a late start, we had a resultingly late summit. The weather was great, though. I think that by the time we left the summit (we probably stayed on top a good hour or 2), it was probably 17.00 or 17.30. We had the strange experience of having a Flight for Life helicopter fly right over us (seen like he was in a big hurry) right at the summit! Great weekend.

Route Climbed: Stevens Gulch Date Climbed: 80's and July 16, 2001  Sucess!

I've climbed this one four or five times, usually along with Torreys. The most memorable was a trip during a freak storm that was dropping enough snow to cause widespread sluffing and rockfall on McClellan Mountain. We probably should have turned around.
