6x  Sucess!

I have climbed Hawksbill several different ways. Once I did it as part of a big loop that also included Old Rag, Robertson Mountain, and Stony Man. On another occasion I climbed it from Mt. Zion Church in Luray, also climbing Nakedtop along the way - over 18 miles roundtrip. Most recently I descended from Hawksbill Gap alongside Hawksbill Creek to see the numerous falls there, then ascended the north slopes of Nakedtop to its summit and continued to the summit of Hawksbill.

I've been on top at least twice, both times on the Cedar Run - Whiteoak Canyon loop.

Favorite hike in HS  Sucess!

Hiked up Hawksbill as often as I could when in high school (which, since I didn't own a car until senior year, meant as often as I could talk my parents into it).

fine views  Sucess!

Shenandoah is a magical place. Nothing overly-dramatic about it, but it slowly grows on you like drinking scotch.

Completely Alone  Sucess!

Wanted a challenge so I started at the base of Cedar Run and the lower Whiteoak Canyon Parking lot. Hiked up Cedar Run to Hawksbill. A modest ~3300 feet of elevation gain and about 8 miles round trip coming back down Cedar Run. Little bit of snow and it was about 10 degrees at the top. Saw not a soul until the lower parking lot.

From Skyline Drive  Sucess!

While spending one on one time with my daughter, we hiked to the summit of this peak. Sometimes the excitement of the moment is lost on our children, but I think she will remember these moments later.

Backpacked up in 1966!  Sucess!

And spent the night in the shelter with a group of Girl Scouts. I remember this so well because when we woke up on Sunday morning fog filled the entire valley below us and we felt like we were floating above the clouds. It was truly a magical hiking experience! Amazingly, I'm still backpacking although not as far and not carrying as much (LOL)!

Not too impressed  Sucess!

The hike was short and pretty easy. The view from the summit wasn't what I hoped. Hawksbill is surrounded by other tall mountains so all you see around you are other peaks- no good view of the valley floor like from Stony Man. I sat near the shelter for about 15 minutes watching three Peregrine Falcons diving down the cliff face and circling back up, occasionally swooping at one another.

Fantastic View...  Sucess!

Nice stroll up the 1 mile trail from the Upper Hawksbill Parking Lot. The whole family made the trip and we were rewarded with spectacular views and pesky flies on the summit. It was nice to see Old Rag this time after having zero visibilty on her summit two years earlier. No wildlife sightings except for the hawks riding the thermals. I hope the Rangers returned the two lost hikers from Richmond that we dropped off at the Thornton Gap entrance back to their car at the lower White Oak Canyon lot.

Hawksbill Hike  Sucess!

Climbed with a group of friends from college. Nice, short hike to some good views at the top. Lucky enough to spot a bear and come EXTREMELY close to a pair of deer that totally disregarded us.

Bear Sighting  Sucess!

Climbed it via Whiteoak Canyon Trail to the Appalachian Trail, to the Hawksbill Summit Trail. On my way up the summit trail I watched a bear frolic in the woods about 25 yards away for nearly 10 minutes. Views were limited from the top because it was so hazy and humid.

Been there, done that...

...now if I could only remember when! I'm guessing it was in the fall of 2003, but I don't say that with any certainty.

Hawksbill with my mom  Sucess!

My mom and I did the Hawksbill Loop Trail in September 2006. It was really interesting to see the sun shining on Old Rag and Robertson Mountain covered in shadows only a couple of miles away.
