Haystack  Sucess!

After getting a late start (intentionally so the water would be warmer), Kessler and I headed for Pleiadis Canyon in the La Sal Mountains since it had been on our list for a long time. Conditions were really good in the canyon and we finished it in just over two hours.

Since we finished the canyon so fast we decided to climb a peak. We drove up to Geyser Pass and climbed Haystack Mountain from there. There were a lot of cows around and one mother with a calf was pretty aggressive. We took a long detour around her. The climb was steep and with boulderhopping, but still easier than expected. The views were nice, but there was lots of haze in the air from forest fires.

Haystack Mountain  Sucess!

I took an easier route than shown on the map on the summit page. Starting from Geyser Pass, I drove north on the 4WD road (shown as 0243 on the USGS topo) which ended at a nice campsite. From there, it's a short walk north through the trees where there are faint trails and a few fallen trees to step over. Once out of the trees there's a decent trail (either a game/cow or use trail, not constructed or maintained) all the way to the saddle between Haystack Mountain and Burro Ridge. The climb from the saddle, up through the talus, to the summit of Haystack Mountain wasn't bad at all. The talus was larger and fairly well-consolidated, and while the going was tedious, I didn't have any major spills going up or down.

Ski Descent  Sucess!

Snow machined up from Gold Basin and started from the pass. Sweet spring skiing and views to knock your boots off.

Hay Ya!

What a great hike with family! Add Burro Ridge for a little time and extra high county views or both the North and Middle Peaks.

Haystack Mountain  Sucess!

Started at 8:35 a.m. Was on the summit by 10:40. Took much longer than I thought, bushwhacking in the forest slowed me down. Free roaming cattle. Absolutely gorgeous fall colors.
