Thought I'd knock off a high point while we were on a family camping vacation
Left the parking lot at 6:24 pm. Summitted at 9:30 under one of the darkest skies I have seen. The stars and milky way were all in their glory. Trail was a little hard to follow after the first false summit. However, it was very east to spot on the way down. A lot of rocks, so it was hard to make much time, but all in all a nice hike and another state high point.
Toughest/highest elevation highpoint I've done so far. It is time to start eating less junk food, drinking less adult beverages, and exercising more if I want to summit all 50.
Great day for a hike with my son - weather was in 60's, clear, sunny day. Met with snow on the trail in the mid section - used microspikes. Snow was melting during the day causing slushy, mushy snow. Upper mile was clear of snow - loose rock. Trail is well marked. up near the top there are tall poles to look for. Great views on top and a bit windy.
I carried my 15 year old dog the whole way and she made a ton of people smile!
After going to the north rim, I kept seeing this peak off in the distance and thought I’d knock it off on the way back home. The weather was perfect, although the trail had plenty of ice. Some of the others on the route had micro-spikes, so I’d advise you to bring them. I took a couple of spills without them. The peak reminded me of the southern cascades and it was great to come out of the forest right as the sun was setting. A great job way to get back into the mountains after a long hiatus.
One of my favorite HPs to date. Seeing the grand canyon from the summit was amazing. The hike through the forested area is great, too.
Great hike - trail was well maintained and beautiful. Was making good time until I reached the first saddle and the wind picked up. By the time I was 50 ft from the summit, I was basically crawling to keep from being knocked over! Made it though, caught some amazing views as well. Round-trip took 5.5 hrs.
Things weren’t going well so I headed south. Clear skies and mild temps made the SF Peaks a clear choice. The trail was more rugged than expected and my poorly fitted boots ate at my heels. It took about 6 hours round-trip with the sightseeing. I could see several small fires on the plateau and a ranger pointed them out as he finished replacing the summit sign. The lacquer for the previous sign was not up to regulation for a wilderness area.
Only took two hours and fifty minutes up and half an hour less going down. The trail was well set up and maintained. Very windy at the top, which took some of the edge off the day’s heat.
Trail are very rocky & tree roots some down timber. Lots of controlled burns
Great day running in the Kachina Peaks! Summitted Humphreys from Schultz Tank via Weatherford trail.
Yep, it was hard, but I did it. Wasn't really hard until going down. That park sucks. Was very cold and windy at the top. Met a woman at the peak who was hiking it for her 22nd b'day.
Super cold and windy above treeline. Snow obscured part of the trail as it headed up to the ridge. We wore all the layers today. Surprised to see people heading up in shorts. Beautiful summit and we had it to ourselves for a half hour! Nice windbreak on top.
Sunny at the bottom, snowing at the top
Cold before dawn. trip report
Climbed on a cloudy day but still had great views all the way up
Super windy day.
Summited via the standard route from the Arizona ski bowl. As I approached the parking area, it was clear that stiff winds were going to be an issue on this day as the clouds overhead appeared to be racing. Once above treeline, the “breeze” picked up to near gale strength. Kind of an exciting adrenaline rush as I worked my way upwards before finally diving into semi-protected walled stone cubby area on top of Arizona.
Solo hike. Very memorable.
Left SLO, CA at midnight and got to the summit some 15 hours later. Little snow on the trail but freakin cold at the top! Didn't even know it was there until we were on our way to the Grand Canyon Rim to rim to rim and wondering what to do our first day in AZ.
