Jatunmontepuncu dwarfed by Chopiraju and Cayesh, from Ishinca

Unless you know where to look, it's almost impossible to distinguish the summit of Jatunmontepuncu from the large white glacier expanse in the background, north of Chopiraju. Between Jatunmontepuncu and that glacier lies the upper Quilcayhuanca valley, which isn't glaciated at all, but that's hidden from view. To find the summit of Jatunmontepuncu in this photo, follow the dark rocky ridge coming from the left to its highest punt. Just before, it's vertical for a short while. Actuall, the normal route comes from the right, over the glacier and the southwest ridge. Not much further to the right, where the darker rocky slopes of Chopiraju provide a contrasting background, the glaciated ridge is clearly visible. 26 July 2011.
