Is there a story...

...or legend behind this painting? Something like Eiger is bad boy (because of its north face) and Monch is jealous because Jungfrau is highest among them so they peppered her and ultimately climbers paid the highest price because of their quarrel :-)

Re: Is there a story...

In the begin of the 20 th century, it was usual to give a human appearance and life to well known mountains. This scene shows the Mônch (the monk) giving snuff to the Eiger (the ogre). The Jungfrau (the virgin) sneezes after her pinch and the climbers are rushed down.

Re: Is there a story...

Thanks Jean-Louis for the info, didn't know that. Also, I never looked into dictionary to see if Eiger means something in German. Now its name adds another dimension to me. Ogre suits it very well :-)
