That is one BAD bird...

...have had windscreen wipers and a tent flysheet shredded by one of those - and even had a sleeping bag nibbled whilst I was laying in it. They don't need to be protected and can take perfectly good care of themselves - knowing exactly how far to hop away if you lose the plot and throw rocks at them - and then they just wait.. and come back..

When watching these birds and their antics it certainly looks like they can take care of themselves. On the short run the individuals can indeed, for they are smart enough for that, but from what I understood as I visited NZ that's not the case for the species. The Kea Conservation Trust explains more.

By the way, at Arthur's Park I saw one pecking away at the rubber around a car window. The car owner might be less sympathetic to the plight of these birds if, upon seeing the damage, he would figure out what had happened.
