Kissed By The Sun

Kissed By The Sun

Basin Mountain The term "Kiss of light" is borrowed from the late, climber, mountaineer and internationally renowned photographer Galen Rowell. He gave an inspiring presentation on nature photography at the 1987 American Alpine Club annual meeting in Las Vegas.

Re: Cool light effect!

Thank you David,
I got lucky on this one. I was photographing a nearby mountain, and I noticed this little "kiss of light" on Basin mountain. Ten minutes later, there was no sun on it at all.

Caught in the act.

Great shot, Marc!

Re: Caught in the act.

Very funny, never thought of it that way. I certainly didn't mean to barge in on the Sun and Basin Mt having a little thing there.
Thank you Roxy,

Re: Like a precious jewelry

Thank you Aranka,
I really didn't invent the name "kissed by the sun" I borrowed it from a well known mountaineer and photographer.
Your photographs are incredibly beautiful.

Re: Lovely

Thank you Tarol. Having lived in Bishop for a long time, you know very well where this mountain is. I was taking photos of Mount Tom and saw this light effect on Basin. Very lucky me.

Re: Brilliance

I am speechless Byron. I really don't know how to respond to your brilliant comment.
You have put it in such a beautiful way.
I am glad to be an instrument in preserving that rare moment.
Thank you,

Framed on my wall at home is a photo I took of this mountain back in December 1997, the day after I proposed to my wife. Maybe the stormy setting in the picture should have been a warning to me! Regardless, it's one of my favorite mountain shots even though it's a roadside view.

Anyway, I never knew the name of this peak before. Thanks, Marc, for the ID and the nice shot. Where's the view from, by the way?

Re: Thanks

Wow, what a life story, or love story, behind your photo! Only if Basin Mountain knew of your story. I'll be sure to tell it the role it has played in your life on my next visit to the Eastern Sierras.

There are a whole bunch of volcanic mounds in The Buttermilks area of the Eastern Sierras. I don't think they all have names.
My wife and I hiked up at least two of these hills the day before looking for the best view of the mountain. We came back before sunrise and hiked up the one we had decided on, and I set up my camera and waited. I think I took about 100 shots of Basin and the surounding mountains. This is one of the most intriguing ones.

Thank you for the visit, Bob,

Such a nice shot!

Basin is a beautiful mtn. and looks heavenly with all the magical elements you could ask for in an eastern Sierra photo. Good job Marc!
