What a fantastic place to celebrate the 4th of July! We sauntered to the summit in a nice 3 hours and 15 minutes. [EDIT: Which is not bad for two old ladies, one with a pulled ligament in her left knee.] It was a beautiful day and I nearly fell asleep at the summit...until I realized I'd been laying on my camelback which drained into a puddle on the summit. So, which one of you is the young college intern who asked "Mind if I smoke?" at the summit? Partner: Deb.
Absolutely beautiful mountain and great route. I'm looking forward to coming back for the Ellingwood Ridge someday soon.
By far the most scenic 14er I've done to date. Beautiful views all the way up, spectacular summit. So, does everyone hike with their dog in CO?
I saw six people today and 2 had dogs. So answering your question, YES.
Alone on this route the entire day, which was surprising on a 14'er. I guess people think there is only one way up...
Did this in September in a foot of snow.
Climbed via Ellingwood Ridge and descended the standard route. A long day, but very fun route.
After failing the year before on Mount of the Holy Cross I was back to Colorado to claim my first 14er. La Plata NW Ridge route was it. I will never be able to forget the feeling of accomplishment I had when I finally reached the true summit. Words can not describe how beautiful it was. It sparked something inside me that led me up Huron Peak, my 2nd 14er, two days later.
Enjoyed a superb winter day on La Plata. Followed the trail until it started heading up La Plata Gulch, then made a beeline to the ridge to avoid avy terrain. The crux is a headwall that goes at class 2+ if you stay to climber's right. Snow was ~ 3 ft deep in the trees, which was not as bad as expected. Amazing views of Ellingwood Ridge in winter.
7/10/05 - Climbed Ellingwood Ridge and decended the standard route. Great day!
1/31/09 - Climbed the NW Ridge on a nice winter day.
Climbed solo through a good deal of snow. Great day!
Solo ascent, solo summit. Lost the trail on the way up due to snow, but rock hopped and wallowed in the snow drifts all the way to the top. Gorgeous day, cold wind!
Beautiful November day. SW ridge route was great.
What a great time in such a beautiful place. Perfect day for a hike. Not crowded from the Winfield route.
Nice hike up, but the weather got kinda nasty on the way down. Shared this one with my cousin from MN (his first)!
Perfect weather. Started early took it slow and easy. Back to the car before noon.
This was an awesome route. Took me around 9 hours car to car. We came down the standard route.
Pretty hike. Enjoyed the company of a friendly woman from Evergreen named Nancy on the way down.
This was my 7th time climbing La Plata. Six of those times were via the standard route. One time was from Winfield approach.
I climbed from inside La Plata Basin but not the North Face as I was low on time so exited to the west and joined the std route.
