Laddie, Don't Forget Your Red Mitten!

Laddie, Don't Forget Your Red Mitten!

"The (Red) Mitten," as seen from nearly 1/4-mile east of Devil's Kitchen north of Sedona, Arizona. "The (Red) Mitten," not to be confused with the Mittens of Monument Valley, lies halfway between Soldier Wash and the entrance to Mormon Canyon. Geologists call Sedona's ruddy sandstone, deposited in a desert some 275 million years ago, the Schnebly Hill Formation. This thick sandstone ranges in quality from very good to very bad. Some sections are compact and reliable for climbing, while others are composed of soft and brittle rock more akin to dried brown sugar. (I wonder which one of them had the most 'make-up' on, for crying out loud!) March 11, 2009

Re: Oooooh

Yeah - this would be a great backdrop for
the group "Pink Floyd" to conduct a live performance, but that's only a "pipe dream" on my part.

It's definitely a really cool (hot in summer) place !!! : ))))))))

Re: Great colors

Actually, the sky was partly cloudy. IMHO,
that's the best time to take daytime photos
in Arizona or even Utah.

Have a great day !!!

A note...

excruciatingly enough, one common name for this formation is "Jap head." Sheesh.

Re: A note...

Is that because Sedona has so many Japanese
tourists that come down here after blowing
most of their time and money at the Grand Canyon?

My wife and I ate at a Chinese joint the last
time we visited Cathedral Rock. The service
was good, the noodles were tasty, but the
prices were as steep as the Grand Tetons.

I thought I should throw the name of a famous
mountain range in there, so I'm not accused
of mindless chit-chat. : ))

Re: A note...

Couldn't tell you why - seems like it's a climber nickname, as many of the spires down there have. Either way looks like a rough climb and I haven't made it up there yet. I like "Cibola Mitten" or "Red Mitten" better, of course.

Re: A note...

Yeah, and appears to be that time of the year
for WEARING red mittens in northern Arizona.

And, to think that just yesterday I was enjoying a nice cool dip in the refreshing
waters of Oak Creek.
