Looking down from the notch...

Looking down from the notch between "K2" and Capitol's knife edge. The largest Pierre Lake is 1400' below. Maroon Peak is in the background, and twin-summited Belleview Mountain (13,233') is to Maroon's right. Photo taken by Erin Burr on August 31, 2003.

Great photo...

Feels like you're hanging in mid-air to take the photo. Nice shot.

Re: Great photo...

Thanks, Larry! It's taken from a cool place to stop for a moment, if you haven't been to Capitol Peak yet.

WATCH YOUR STEP!

Nearby there is a hole that would be easy to step into or fall through as it continues to erode. I walked by the hole this past season. You could look down through this hole all the way to Pierre Lakes basin, a thousand foot drop! Erosion is accelerated on K2. I climbed the mountain nine years prior and the hole WAS NOT THERE! Be on the lookout for it. When climbing Capitol, just after going over K2, the hole will be on your left as you stroll out onto the ridge toward the Knife Edge. WATCH YOUR STEP!

Re: WATCH YOUR STEP!

That's interesting to know, Aaron! Hard to believe that hole's less than a decade old. Erin tried taking a shot looking through it. The picture didn't come out well, but we had to try -- like you said, the exposure through that hole and down the chute is remarkable.
