Remote and beautiful  Sucess!

Hiked and camped from Mattole to Shelter Cove. What a great trip! This came at a time in my life when I really needed it. I spent four days out there and will never forget it. Beached whale, cool light house, lots of stream crossings, and a few areas early in the morning that looked like something out of Jurassic Park. Very cool!

Gorgeous!

My buddy and I drove out to Shelter Cove in time to hike in for an hour or two before dark. Wouldn't you know it, just as the light had faded and we were looking for a spot to camp, a skunk chased us down the beach and sprayed us! It was awful, if you know what I mean. The taste stays in your mouth. Well, despite that episode, and also the fact that it rained most of the time, the next couple days were pretty fun as we hiked north along the beach to somewhere a bit past the Big Flat and camped before hiking back the next day. We never got to hike up in the Kings Range because it was pretty socked in. It's really interesting and fun to have to time your hike according to the tides for certain narrow sections of the beach along the cliffs. There were a lot of whales and sea lions to watch and lots of bear tracks on the beach. Really, this is an exceptionally amazing area to hike in, especially for someone who lives very far away from any ocean!

beautiful hike  Sucess!

Hiked from Shelter Cove to Mattole Apr 20-22 with some friends. Fun time, we had two groups starting at opposite ends. We met up for lunch on the second day and exchanged keys. Saw some whales at the Shelter Cove side, and some Sea Lions on the Mattole side.

short backpack  Sucess!

Hiked in from Usal campground to Jackass Ridge and back. Tough terrain and tough trail. Lots of elevation change, humidity. Saw a mountain lion, elk and lots of deer. Very remote and very beautiful.
