In the Sub-Carpathian region of Buzau county, mud volcanoes occur due to gas emanations and fault zones which make the area muddy. The mud is grey, salty and cold. The gas erupting from the depth of 3 km through the underground layers of clay and water, emerges as bubbles in small craters as demonstrated in nature preserve named Vulcanii Noroioşi de la Pâclele Mari (RO).
