Magee trail  Sucess!

Nice day hike along the Magee trail. Added Crater with Magee, the road was easily drivable to the trailhead, though there was some debris on the road. There was an amazing amount of downed wood in the area, but it rarely obstructed the trail.

Magee Trail  Sucess!

Up from the Magee Trailhead on what was once a top-notch trail. Silly me spent over an hour clearing debris off the trail along the way for the two other people who will be using the trail this year. In the fallen tree capital of the world, FS32N48 was blocked a quarter mile from the TH. On top, it's easy to imagine the old lookout, souvenir nails still on hand, get yours while supplies last. In a day spent on this old volcano, I continued over to Crater Peak, then to Red Cliff, and down without seeing a soul.

Time to Revisit the Magee TH  Sucess!

After four years away, I couldn't resist the easy access in late December. Coming in from Ashpan, the roads had sections of snow and ice, especially close to the trailhead. Logging was still active, especially near Ashpan. The trailhead road had two downed trees blocking it after the first big turnaround/parking area, adding less than half a mile to the hike each way. The trail itself seems to have only a few downed trees across it compared to the slew of downed trees that added to the adventure of my previous visits. The snow on the trail was shallow and patchy much of the way up, but slick in many places. Around 8000 feet, the snow was over a foot deep and ranged from 2-3 feet deep at the rim. Many areas above tree line had a slick layer of ice, requiring careful stepping and route choice being that I was only wearing hiking boots. It was a beautiful, clear day with no wind until light winds cooled me upon reaching the crater rim. There was a snow/ice free band on the top inner edge of the rim, making the walk over to Crater peak much more managable than it would have otherwise been.

With Crater  Sucess!

Backpacked from Cypress to Everett Lake. Left the guys behind so they could drink beer and fish - I bagged two peaks. Wish I hadn't waited until later to go - would have liked to have gotten the other ones up here too.

rushed. summer 07  Sucess!

We planned to hike to crater peak, but decided to settle for magee due to time constraints. A small lake formed by snowmelt was present, but we dicided not to go to it because it looked like the only way up would be slogging through loose sand. Great views and warm weather. I was almost sick to see that disrespectful half-humans had smashed beer bottles on the top.

Thanksgiving Hike 2007  Sucess!

I had to take advantage of the unusually warm and dry Fall weather and get up into the high country. I started at the Magee TH on a cool morning with temps in the upper 20's. Much of the lower part of the trail was slightly frozen and crunched under my feet as I hiked up it. It was sunnier and warmer a bit higher up, but snow patches became abundant, developing into ankle deep snow by the time I reached the peak. The snow was cold and powdery, so my feet stayed dry depite just wearing trail runners. I reached the end of the steep climb to Magee Peak in about 1 hr 15 min., but then braved extreme wind chill on the crater rim to continue on to Crater Peak.
