Just checking in with a report . On 8/30/2015 I climbed Mahoney Butte through a chute on the SW side of the butte. I had originally intended to reach the summit from the N side but moved around to the W face and ran into vertical walls and very steep, loose rock chutes. I had decided to call it a day when I went around to the W-SW side of the butte and saw a promising chute. Not sure it would pan out I decided to go for it. It was a steep walk up and then an opening in the rocks to the W lead to the top. It is a most amazing, serene summit with an awesome 360 degree view of the Pioneers, Boulders, Smokies and and local peaceful foothills. The return trip required some bushwhacking and out a dry creek bed to the trail then back to the trailhead. It is a great hike with many high peak features.I'll attempt to attach some photos.
