Liam and I took a quick trip up this morning to burn a few calories before putting them all back watching the super bowl. Beautiful on top. Warm and no wind.

First summit for little guys  Sucess!

Took a trip up with my brother in law, my wife & son &my little 7 year old nephew who bagged his first summit with his little sister Eden who my brother in law carried up in a kid pack (sucks to be him!) 17 degrees today, but warm once you start working. The summit was cold and windy. Fun day to share the freedom of the hills with the little ones!

Whiteout on Malans  Sucess!

Hiked today in whiteout conditions with my son Liam an effort to burn some holiday calories. In spite of heavy falling snow, the trail just had 2 to 3 inches of powder on top of the hard pack. Found an awesome christmas tree (will post the picture). Great day!

You betcha!

Ran with Bryce W. Jun32 and Matt. What a fun way to start my day. 40 minutes to the summit and we bombed it on the way down. I'll be back.

Friday Climb  Sucess!

Humped my way up Malan for the second time. Last trip up the peak I was smoking a pack a day, weighed 30 Lbs more and did it in the middle of winter. Not surprisingly, this time was MUCH easier. Weather was nice and the 10 degree drop in the shade was greatly appriciated. Had a Mount Everest Moment on the peak. 1.5 hours up and 1 hour down.

11 Jan 2014....GPS Distance 27th Street to Summit exactly 5.0 roundtrip...Elevation Gain 27th to Summit is 2086 feet.

Father's Day Hike  Sucess!

Very easy lower stretch along a beautiful creek and well shaded. From there to the peak it was much steeper but a great little hike for a round trip of just a couple of hours.

4 Seasons in a Day  Sucess!

Climbed in a party of about 20 friends and family. Left the top of 27th street in a light rain, then hail hit while in Taylor Canyon, snow started falling on us while we were in the switchbacks, and it was warm and sunny when we got to the peak. We continued on in to Malan's Basin and checked out the remnants of the resort. Warm and sunny all the way back. Fun day!

Waterfall to Malan's Peak  Sucess!

Oh what a difference a month makes.
Went up Waterfall Canyon, then followed the chute to the right (south and then east) of the waterfall, then north to the ridge. From there we found the trail down (north-east) to the river that supplies the waterfall.
There was just a little bit of snow along the river, but the trail was fairly visible. Followed it east into Malan's Basin, then up (north-west) to the peak, and down the switchbacks.
A great hike!

Up, wandering, darkness, down late  Sucess!

I went up with a friend and his 16 and 14 year-old children. The plan was to repeat the hike that we did on July 31st of last year, where we went up into the Basin from the Peak, and then down Waterfall Canyon.
We began the hike at 3:00 p.m., got to the summit by 5:00, and should have turned around. :) Instead we went into the summit, and everything was covered in snow. Go figure. ;)
We tried to follow the river down, but that was where the snow was the deepest, so we scrambled up, over, and through slightly less-deep snow and brambly trees and brush until I found the top of the waterfall . . . at about 8:00. There was a lovely view of the sunset, which I don't recommend seeing. :)
We couldn't remember how to get over to the Waterfall chute, as the trail (if there was a trail) was covered, and so we ended up turning around and following our tracks back to the Basin, the Peak, and the switchbacks. Did I mention the snow?
I made it off the mountain at 11:15. It was kind of cold, but we were in good spirits, had flashlights, warm clothes, and plenty of water and food. It was a good adventure!

Malan's in the sunshine  Sucess!

Quick trip up today with my wife and son. The sun was out and 52 degrees. The trail in upper Taylor Canyon and Malan's is still hard pack snow, and in spots it is getting icey. Snow was melting pretty good off of the summit though. Great day!

Malan's Peak Part Duex  Sucess!

Climbed old Malan's for the second time this winter this morning with my wife, 12 year old son, and 9 year old daughter. It was a beautiful day and lots of people were on the trail. Ate lunch on top and enjoyed the warm sunshine. It was downright balmy today as compared to the peak conditions when we climbed it on the 20th of January when it was windy and cold. Great day, and hopefully passed on some mountain fever to the wife and kids!

Malan's Peak  Sucess!

Climbed Malan's for the first time in the winter with my 12 year old son Liam. Having grown up on the top of 21st street, I have climbed Malan's and the big MO all of my life, but this was our first trip in the snow. Beautiful day, great company and an MRE of Chilli Mac on the summit with my boy. It doesnt get any better than that!

Malan's Basin from Taylor Canyon  Sucess!

Went with Lori up Taylor Canyon then attempted to go down waterfall. Ended up on top of the waterfall and couldn't find a safe decent. Finally backtracked the way we came. Pretty Hike though. We also did some exploring in the basin and found a lot of stinging nettle the hard way. There was also lots of angry ants and one rattlesnake by the creek.

Good day  Sucess!

Out for a hike went up Taylor and down waterfall

Bun84067 - Aug 11, 2009 8:01 pm Date Climbed: Jul 31, 2009

Climbed up from 27th street, kept on going into Malan's Basin, then descended via Waterfall Canyon. It was a great day!
Saw a 3' rattlesnake on the trail leading out of the Basin to Waterfall canyon, but it was just snoozing and seemed to be in a good mood.

One of my favs  Sucess!

It's the best hike around the Ogden area if you want a great workout, awesome scenery, and have a couple hours to burn. Been up there at least 20 times in the last 10 years.
