Did you rattle any cattle in the white area of the map? I seem to remember seeing many cattle grazing that open slope for miles to either side of your route(s). I thought the gulch would be out of the way of most of the grazing cattle and out of view of any paniolos with lassos. What was the vegetation like in the gulch?
and not much evidence of them. We saw a couple of cow pies, but nothing like you would expect if it had been grazed recently. The gulch had two or three places where the vegetation was dense enough that we climbed out for a short distance but 95% of it was pretty much a cow trail. I seem to remember cattle when I was there before, too, but the area is in the grips of a pretty severe drought (1/5 normal precip for the past year or more.) so that may explain why no cows.
