MIND BENDING strata in Nevada
This "mind-bending" land had been laid down as sheets of mud in the bottom
of a vast playa lake where ancient animals once roamed. The mud turned to
stone, and the animals faded to fossils. Tectonic activity JUMBLED the
area and turned the lake's bed on edge! (YOU try sleeping like that!)
Now, we see several mountain-sized ridges of sedimentary materials
(sandstone, limestone & mudstone of various colours and hues) that have
been steeply tilted up; some nearly vertically.
Lovell Wash cuts through the ridges, as it drains the arid south side of of Nevada's Muddy Mountains.
View is from the Anniversary (Borax) mine, looking northwest across the wash. I did not see any signs of water in this area. ~ March 31, 2008 ~
