Mirila

Mirila

I was hesitating to take and show around this picture, but at the end the deceased are not resting here, so let me explain what I read about mirila. They are connected with funeral ceremonies, but the origin of the word 'mirila' comes not from 'mir', which is 'peace' in slavic languages, but from 'meriti', which means 'to measure'. So, mirila are a kind of measures. When people on remote areas of Velebit mountain died, they were carried hours long to lower areas where graveyards were. On that way, the deceased were put on the ground and as a part of the ceremony, a stone was put behind their head and in front of feet. So, walking by ancient paths around for example Ljubotic village, you can see many of these places, where mirila are of all sizes - adults were dying, and children as well. Actually families had their own places, where stopping by, on their long funerals.
